Ana Flavia’s modes of transportation in Lund, Sweden

My name is Ana Flávia, and I am a graduate student pursuing a Master's degree in Human Rights at Lund University in Sweden. I originally come from Brazil, specifically from the countryside of São Paulo. Living in Sweden for the past two years has been an incredible experience, offering me a unique perspective on sustainability and green mobility. In my opinion, transportation in Sweden, particularly in Lund, is efficient and well-organized. Since Lund is relatively small and compact, I usually walk to the university or the supermarket on my daily commute. I use my bicycle for other activities because Lund is an extremely bike-friendly city, with dedicated bike lanes and numerous bike rental stations, making it very convenient. When the weather is less favorable, I take the bus. The local bus system is reliable, punctual, and covers many parts of the city. For trips to other cities like Malmö or Copenhagen, I usually take the Öresundståg. The trains are comfortable, fast, and offer frequent services, making it easy to travel across regions. The Swedish transportation system is highly integrated, and I can access buses, trains, and trams using a single travel card. The transportation infrastructure is well-maintained, clean, and safe. The trains and buses are comfortable, and the bike paths are secure. The emphasis on eco-friendly transportation options, such as biking and public transport, aligns well with Sweden's commitment to sustainability. However, public transportation in Sweden can be relatively expensive for someone with a student budget. I believe that more affordable options or subsidies for students could be beneficial. Plus, cycling and walking can be challenging during the harsh winter. More heated waiting areas at bus stops and improved snow removal on bike paths could mitigate this issue. Compared to Brazil, Lund’s transportation system is more efficient and punctual than São Paulo’s, where traffic congestion often leads to delays. Furthermore, public transportation in Lund feels safer, both in terms of crime and infrastructure. São Paulo, while improving, still faces huge challenges in these areas, especially for women. Finally, Lund has a stronger focus on sustainability, with a higher percentage of the population using bikes and public transport compared to São Paulo, where most of the population still has a car-reliant behavior.
